Sales Tax on Clothing When in New York

Would you pay sales tax on clothing when in New York? Well, it depends on your taste in clothing but there may be ways to avoid it.

Sales tax is imposed on the purchase of clothing and footwear costing US$110.00 or more per item or pair as of August 1, 2009 so if your clothing or footwear is US$110.00 each, you will be paying almost 9% (4.000% State, 4.500% City and 0.375% MCTD) sales tax.

Could this additional cost be avoided? Yes! In New Jersey, clothing and footwear are currently exempt from tax and remains exempt from tax so if you plan to shop at a store in New York and they have a location as well in the State of New Jersey, you may want to grab a NJ Transit bus or train there so that you can shop at the location in the State of New Jersey to save.
